Whilst I move through the process of this current project I start to realise how much I choose to change and how active I am in this.  I find the change that makes me deconstruct of break down parts of myself that are not working are from external experiences or events in my life.  Whilst the actual rebuilding change I go through is an internal event an action that I have a chance to guide and steer in a way I choose. When we look around we see these external events in everyday life, however it is harder to see the internal process of change.  These inner workings are what I am trying to incorporate in this series of sculptures hopefully replicating the way this change occurs.

Spent the day taking care of business in the library.. long day but seemed to have achieved a lot.. got home and started to do the soap casting for one part of the final piece.. soap is not as soft as I thought carving it out of the 11kg bucket it arrived in was a bit of a task.. however i have two legs of the poured and i will wait to see how they turn out as to whether I carry on with the other parts… I will post some photos of the casting process later in the week.

Some artists that are starting to make me think more about where I am heading are Janine Antoni and Mona Hatoum… Here are a couple of photos of their work..Janine Antoni

Hope you enjoy…

The project is pretty much on track.  The idea is starting to develop with my mould making being completed on schedule this week so fingers crossed as I start to cast the first few structures.  I am looking at the moment at casting the structures that are going to be deconstructed.. The deconstruction resembles those times of change in our lives, there are lots of times when these occur the only real difference is how quick this change occurs or what triggered this change.

As I continue to blog I will expand on the details of the installation, however whilst I am still developing the concept any input as to influences or ideas as to moments that have caused change in your lives would be appreciated.  Also if you notice moments of change in the environment around where you are living such as tress being felled or walls being knocked down..  These times of change are abrupt whilst others such as housing development or your kids growing up are moments that happen over years..

Anyway until next time…

Tetris style sculptures by Michael Johansson really are amazing pretty crazy when you take a second look and see how he packs everything in..

Whilst looking into the deconstruction part of this project I am looking into materials such as sugar and salt to cast it.  Plaster was an option however to allow that to deconstruct I would need to use an acid.  So sugar and salt seem like good alternatives.  Whilst looking into these two mediums I also realised soap could be a great material also.  One sculptor I found who makes some really intense works using salt is Motoi Yamamoto here is a link I found with some examples of his work:

with sugar Ella Burke has found some great ways to use sugar which really seems to be missed as quite a versatile medium.  Here is  a link to her blog:

I have ordered some soap and I will be looking to do some experiments with sugar and salt also.  I will post some images of how the experiment turn out.

Today I was back in the studio which felt good..  Six weeks ahead putting this project together and getting ready for an exhibition.

The piece is starting to gain pace and my thoughts and research are centred around this construction and deconstruction idea that is an ongoing process.  I have been looking at artists that have been part of process art in the past such as Richard Serra and Eva Hesse.  Also looking at artists and designers who have made objects that have grown or formed without complete control.  One such designer/artist is Asif Khan his furniture is amazing and is really beautiful in it creation:

This a live project that will be documented here on my blog as it evolves over the next six to eight weeks. The project will culminate in an exhibition in Oxford. With this blog I am looking to post updates on what I am currently doing and also where my thoughts are with relation to the project and its direction. I encourage those who are interested and would like to be involved to add comments with any ideas, links or information that you feel maybe relevant.

The project is titled “The Change Allowance” as I am looking at the process of change within the individual. These moments in time where we are affected by certain events cause a reaction within us that prompts us to change. These moments are sometimes drawn out over periods of time whilst others are short and devastating. I looking at ways to visualise these moments and portray this process that we all go through on our journey through life.

I hope you enjoy being part of the process and I hope you understand the conversation that will follow.
